The Organizing Committee wishes to announce that from 8 - 10 May, 2003, the University of Murcia (Spain) and the Consejer’a de Educación y Cultura de la Comunidad de Murcia will host the IV International Conference on Islamic Legal Studies. The topic of the conference is Law and Sufism. Papers will be presented in any of the following conference sub-themes or panels:
- Sufis, Rituals and Islamic Law.
- Sufi Critique of Islamic Law in Art and Literature.
- Views of fuqaha' on Sufism.
- Ibn al-'Arabi al-Mursi as a jurist.
Although the subject-matter is legal, the organizers emphasize that, as in the past, the Conference is intended to be a platform for specialists from different disciplines (law, history of religions, social science) dealing with Islamic Law. There is no limitation as to the historical period covered by papers.
The Conference will be organized by a Committee consisting of Alfonso Carmona (Dept. of Philology, University of Murcia), Maribel Fierro (Dept. of Arabic Studies, CSIC, Madrid), Peri Bearman (Islamic Legal Studies Program, Harvard Law School), Camilla Adang (Dept. of Arabic, University of Tel Aviv), and Muhammad Khalid Masud (International Institute of Islam in the Modern World, Leiden).
