The conference will concentrate on the way foreign political
models were adopted or used in European and American politics,
roughly from the time of the French Revolution up to the 1960s.
Although presentations of theoretical debates (e.g. about the
merits of the nineteenth-century British constitution) or cases
only involving individuals may be useful and interesting, the
practical use of political methods by groups will be the main focus
of attention.
Possible subjects for discussion will include, on the one hand,
the actual process of the adoption of foreign examples through,
for instance, mutual visits or letters, and on the other, the
misunderstandings, rhetorical fashions, political strategies etc.
involved in political transfer, and the implications of this for the
actual concept of politics.
Plenary speakers will include:
- Prof. Charles Tilly (Columbia University)
- Prof. Marjan Schwegman (Dutch Institute in Rome)
- Prof. Paolo Pombeni (University of Bologna)
- Prof. Henk te Velde (University of Groningen)
