The third workshop for this project focuses on “Gender, Sexuality, and Spirituality”. It will take an interdisciplinary approach and address a range of issues (with a core focus on literary representations), including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and animism, as well as the growth of religious fundamentalism and the relationship of oral and written religious texts to gender and sexuality. It will bring in scholars working on a range of geographic areas and across different periods.
The workshop will feature two public lectures by writers who have engaged with issues of and myth and spirituality.
Michael Arditti will speak on "A Literary Passion: Michael Arditti Reads from and Discusses the Reactions to His Controversial Novel Easter" (2 April, Cruciform Building Lecture Theatre 2, UCL, 5.30 pm).
Buchi Emecheta will speak on "Women's Spirituality in Nigeria" (3 April, Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre, SOAS, 5.30 pm). Her talk is co-sponsored by the Centre of African Studies, University of London.
