Religion, State & Society is the only English-language academic publication devoted to these issues in communist and formerly communist countries throughout the world, and focusing on the legacy of the encounter between religion and communism. What problems are these religious communities now facing in their own countries and in a rapidly changing world? How much contact and cooperation is there between religious communities of East and West? Where are the areas of misunderstanding and conflict? Religious believers in Europe, Asia and the rest of the world have much to learn from the way in which their counterparts in communist and formerly communist countries are tackling social, cultural, ethnic, political and ecclesiological problems, and vice versa.
While retaining its East-west perspective, Religion, State & Society also addresses subjects of world-wide concern to religious believers and religious communities such as legislation on religion, religious rights and freedoms, ecumenism, religion and national identity and tha challenges of globalisation. As well as authoritative and provocative articles, Religion, State & Society includes book reviews, bibliographies and translations of important documents. The journal encourages debate within the pages of a single issue and in the form of responses to articles which have appeared in earlier issues.
