The Covenant of the Goddess, an organization of Witches founded in 1975, will be sponsoring academic presentations at its annual business meeting and convention in 2003. Merrymeet will be held August 21-25 in Reno, Nevada.
Papers are sought on a variety of topics, including the treatment of Witchcraft in literature and popular culture, the sociology of new religions, theological prespectives on Witchcraft, the recent history of Witchcraft or cross cultural studies.
Since the majority of the audience will be practising Witches, this conference will present an unique opportunity to dialogue, to test assumptions and to make connections for further research.
Suggested topics include representations ot the Witch in contemporary literature and popular culture; history of contemporary Witchcraft; Witchcraft as a sociological phenomenon; theological discussions of Witchcraft. All papers should focus on Witchcraft as a religious practice, not as folklore, horror figure, teen fad, etc.
Send or e-mail abstracts of 250-300 words or questions about proposed topics, to Dr. Rita Rippetoe. More information about the Covenant of the Goddess may be found at the organization web site.
