This international conference will examine the crucial aspects of the relationship between the religious (religious houses and individual religious such as hermits and anchorites) and the laity, between 1000 and 1300 across Europe. Papers will explore religious houses as neighbours, religious houses in the urban environment, relationships between the benefactions and the religious institutions and the role of monasteries in the local communities (hospitals, cura animarum). The key-note lectures by Stephen White, Arnoud-Jan Bijsterveld, Richard Landes and R.I. Moore will address the central themes of the current research on the religious and the laity.
