“The Role of Media in the Nation-Building Processes”

The 2nd International Natiology Conference is an important scholarly gathering dealing with the issues of nation-building in the world’s societies. This year we encourage papers on the role of media in the nation-building processes in the European Union, United States, Russia, China, Israel, Serbia/Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq, as well as papers on the media’s role in the resolution of recent conflicts of national interests.
Proposals may focus on particular cases of nation-building, theoretical questions, or cross-regional comparisons. Papers related to Internet resources and technologies that may facilitate research on nation-building are encouraged.
Location:
The Conference will be held at the conference facilities (McAlister Hall) of the University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Avenue, Conway, AR 72035 USA.
Schedule:
The Conference will begin on Thursday, July 24th, at 1 p.m., and end on Friday, July 25th at 5 p.m. A closing dinner will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Paper Proposals:
All proposals must be sent to the Conference Program Chair and Director Dr. Vincent E. Hammond via email. Submission deadline: 1 May 2003. No prospective speaker may submit more than one paper proposal. Proposals must include:
- the title, and a 250-500 word abstract of the paper;
- the affiliation, postal address, telephone, fax, and email (very important) of the speaker;
- a one-paragraph biographical statement of the speaker.
Registration:
Registration-at-the-door is free for all speakers and attendees. Registration will begin at noon on 24 July 2003 in 102 McAlister Hall. Although registration is not required, we encourage all conferees outside of Arkansas to let the Conference Program Chair know about their plans. Conferees who need transportation to/from the Little Rock Airport and to/from the Ramada Inn and UCA should contact Dr. Vincent E. Hammond via email or send a fax. Please give your name, title, college or university address, and phone and/or fax numbers.
Funding:
Speakers and other conferees are responsible for seeking their own funds to cover all travel and accommodation costs. We are unfortunately unable to assist participants financially. Although registration is free, a fee of $15.00 will be charged to cover expenses for the deli lunch and closing dinner. The fee is payable upon registration at-the-door.
Accommodation:
the Conference has an arrangement with Ramada Inn to provide housing at the special summer conference rate of $59/night per room. The rooms accommodate up to four guests, include a free continental breakfast, and come equipped with free HBO cable, in-room coffee and electric dryers. Reservations may be made by directly contacting Ramada at 501-329-8392 (phone) or 501-329-0430 (fax). Speakers and other participants are urged to reserve as early as possible.
Transportation:
Free shuttle service will be provided to/from the Little Rock Airport to the Ramada Inn and from the Ramada Inn to/from the University.
For Arkansans and regional scholars coming by car, take exit 127 off I-40, turning right onto Highway 64. The Ramada (815 E. Oak Street, Conway, Arkansas 72032) is 100 yards away on the right.
To get to the UCA campus from the Ramada Inn turn left onto Oak Street (Highway 64), continue west to Caldwell. Go west on Caldwell Street and turn left onto Donaghey, going south until you see the campus at 201 S. Donaghey.
