This five-week NEH Summer Seminar will explore the broad cultural context of the _Libro de buen amor_, the fourteenth-century Castilian work of narrative poetry that professes to teach both vice and virtue. The interdisciplinary program will look at the _Libro's_ role as a watershed of medieval poetics and culture that contributed to the transformation of vernacular literature and artistic expression between the middle of the fourteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth centuries. An unconstrained, interdisciplinary critical paradigm will encourage members of the group to proceed in ways that are compatible with their own interests and study projects. The seminar's work and discussions will be in English and complemented by several visiting lecturers. Comparatists and colleagues from fields other than Spanish are especially encouraged to apply.
