The Eighth Biennial Lessons and Legacies Conference on the Holocaust
will be held November 4-7, 2004 at Brown University in Providence, Rhode
Island. The conference is sponsored by the Holocaust Educational Foundation and by Brown University / Watson Institute for International Studies. The
overall theme of the conference will be "From Generation to Generation."
Panels to date include the following themes:
- The Wehrmacht: Wartime Reality/Postwar Mythology
- Christian and Islamic Antisemitism, Past and Present
- Jewish-Gentile Interaction Across the Divide of 1945
- The Revival of Jewish Life in Europe
- Photography and Art of the Holocaust
- Comparative Genocide
- Forced Labor and Reparations
- Intimacy and Massacre: Interethnic Communities and Genocide
- Scandinavia: New Research on Resistance, Collaboration, Antisemitism
- Austria and the Holocaust
- Refuge: Latin America and the Holocaust
Also planned are a retrospective on the work of Raul Hilberg, a plenary
session on Holocaust Literature by Child Survivors, and roundtables on
the themes of Medicine and the Murder of the Disabled; Judgment and Justice; and
Testimony: Interdisciplinary Perspectives.
We welcome proposals for papers related to the above themes to be
considered for inclusion in the various panels or roundtables. Complete
panels on other subjects will
also be considered. Deadline for submission is September 1, 2003.
