I am trying to put a session together for the 2004 AHA Conference in Washington D.C. on the theme: Authority, Trust, and Witness in Medieval and Early Modern Europe. There is still room for one more paper. Papers in this session could touch on the role of “the witness” to establish fact and minimize conflict in law and politics, as well as examine how individuals served as witnesses in a variety of social and economic situations in order to avoid conflict and resolve disputes. During the medieval and early modern periods individuals acted as witnesses both formally and in more informal settings in order to establish claims of authority, to reinforce trust, and to vouch for the good name of others. If you are interested in participating in this session, please send a proposal as soon as possible (the Feb. 15 deadline is fast approaching).
