This panel looks at the problems and possibilities involved in tracking cultural categories, their continuities and discontinuities, across time and space. In so doing, we would like to re-evaluate older approaches, such as those of the contributors to Ohnuki-Tierney’s volume Culture Through Time (Stanford UP, 1990). The panel will focus on the fate of cultural categories in the turbulent social waters of 19th- and 20th-century Latin America. We are interested in contributions that disentangle and elucidate the changes undergone by specific cultural idioms and categories. Papers proposed so far look at transformations in categories of personhood and landscape in 20th-century Chile and shifting ethnic categories in late 19th- and 20th-century west Mexico. We are hoping to present a wide range of perspectives, so the panel is open to anthropologists, historians, literary critics, political scientists, and others.
