The conference aims at exploring relationships between the English language, English-speaking cultures, and diverse mappings of space, symbolic terrains and meaningful divisions in a globalizing world, borders and borderlands, lines of communication and their failure, moments of silence and pregnant pauses. Possible topics include:

• constructing imaginative geographies/histories
• space and place
• gender and space
• gaps and/in canons
• silence and creativity
• globalization and cultural divisions
• globalization and the English language
• the Divided Kingdom
• literature and markets
