A Symposium into the comparative rhetoric(s) of democracy/ies in Ancient Greece, Modern France and Post-Apartheid South Africa will be held in Paris, 11-13 June 2003, at Fondation Singer-Polignac and Ecole normale supérieure, under the aegis of the French Academy and the high patronage of Academician Jacqueline de Romilly. Professor Olivier Cayla, Chair of the Theory of Norms at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales is hosting the event which inaugurates a 5-year research program, sponsored by the French and South African governments. Some of the speakers so far included in the programme are: Paul Ricoeur, Jacques Derrida, Marc Fumaroli, Barbara Cassin, Caroline Jan Swearingen, Erik Doxtader, Philippe Buttgen, Philippe-Joseph Salazar.The Symposium focuses on legal-normative and constitutional rhetoric of forgiveness and consensus. Although papers are by invitation only, the organisers welcome expressions of interest, for possible inclusion in the final programme, by no later than 15 February.
