CFP Armed Forces and American Science and Technology, 19th and 20th centuries

America's armed forces have significantly influenced the development of science and engineering in the United States from the nation's earliest days. The American Historical Association has chosen as the theme for its next annual meeting "War and Peace: History and the Dynamics of Human Conflict and Cooperation." The meeting is scheduled for 5-8 January 2004 in Washington, DC. In conjunction with the meeting, we seek papers for a panel entitled "The U.S. Armed Forces and American Science." We expect to present two sessions at the Smithsonian Institution's museum of American history during the course of the AHA's Washington meeting. In this panel, we are interested in papers that examine the various ways in which the armed forces have supported scientific research and development, whether as agent, patron, or buyer.
