As a part of its new Chancellor's Symposium on Southern History, the Department of History at Troy State University in Troy, Alabama, invites proposals for individual papers, panels and posters for a conference to be held February 21-22, 2003. The theme of the symposium for 2003 is "The Civil War: Research and Ideas 140 Years After Vicksburg and Gettysburg." Due to the nature of the symposium, we are only soliciting proposals from undergraduate students, graduate students and amateur historians (those who are not professionally employed as historians). Papers may be submitted on any theme related to the Civil War, although Alabama topics are particularly encouraged. In addition, in keeping with the theme, innovative, under-represented topics or new intellectual approaches to topics will be given special attention.
The department would encourage proposals for complete panels with 3 papers centered on a certain topic or theme. A chair or commentator is optional, as we hope to facilitate audience participation.
Space will be very limited, and submission of a proposal does not guarantee its acceptance.
Proposals should include:
- For papers or posters: a 250 word abstract of the topic, along with a brief (no more than 2 page) CV or resume.
- For panels: include the above for each participant, as well as a 250 word abstract for the entire panel, and a CV from the chair and/or commentator (if included).
Send 4 copies of the complete proposal (postmarked by January 24, 2003), to the address below.
