The general contours of this panel will explore the salience of emotions in theorizing agency, subjectivity, and community in the arts and social sciences. Key questions that we hope to address are:
- how can we develop a theoretical framework that embraces human emotion without (re)essentializing racial, ethnic, gender and queer subjectivities?
- what is the role of performance theory/performativity in such a framework?
- how does developing a social theory of emotion for American Studies start to change the boundaries for understanding "violence" and "belonging" in American culture?
Topics are open to any and all interdisciplinary approaches to the topics. If you are interested, please send a one-page abstract and one-page c.v. via email to the address below by January 17, 2003. If you have questions, please email me privately.
