The Mari Sandoz Heritage Society has chosen the topic "Mari Sandoz: Letters and Life" for their Annual Conference at the newly opened Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska, April 10-12, 2003.
Papers might focus on
- The Letters of Mari Sandoz edited by Helen Stauffer
- Mari Sandoz: Storycatcher of the Plains, by Helen Stauffer
- biographical works about Sandoz
- letters to and from Sandoz
- biographical works by and about other Western writers
- archival biographical materials on Sandoz
- comparative biographies of Western writers
The 2003 conference of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society will be our first gathering at the new Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center on the campus of Chadron State College - nestled in the beautiful Pine Ridge region of northwest Nebraska.
The Center is a rich source of artifacts and papers on the life and writings of Sandoz and the Sandhills region of the Great Plains; hence, the focus on Sandoz's life.
Mari Sandoz was also a tireless advocate of the West and of women writing about the West. It is fitting to inaugurate the Center with a discussion of the lives of Western men and women.
We welcome papers by academics and anyone else interested in the Great Plains.
By January 15, 2003 send a one-page proposal, including title, summary, bibliography and short vita to the address below.
