On November 15, 2002 at 5 PM Richard Wightman Fox will speak in the Department of Rare Books & Special Collections at the University of Rochester Library on "A Holocaust for Womanhood: The Beecher-Tilton Scandal and the Women's Rights Movement in the 1870s."
Fox, Professor of history at the University of Southern California, is the author of "Trials of Intimacy: Love and Loss in the Beecher-Tilton Scandal." Ten privously unknown letters that relate to the scandal from Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Henry Ward Beecher, Olympia Brown, and others will be on display for the first time. All the letters are addressed to Isabella Beecher Hooker or her husband John Hooker and shed intriguing light on the intersection of the scandal and the women's rights movement.
