The full program (early draft) of THE AMERICAN WESTS conference, sponsored by The Film and History League and the journal FILM & HISTORY, can be found on the Film & History web site.
The meeting is in Kansas City, Missouri at the Marriott-Countryclub Plaza,
a wonderful location. Registration brings you a year of the journal, a luncheon, free parking, and a chance to network with publishers and scholars.
Celebrities include John Cawelti, the luncheon speaker; Jack Nachbar and
Ray B. Browne of the Popular Culture Association; Jim Welsh and John Tibbetts
of The Literature/Film Quarterly; Linda Peavy, Ursula Smith, Susan Cain, Beth
Hoppe and others from Frontier House (PBS); and many others. John E. O'Connor
and Martin Jackson, founders of the journal will attend and preside. Don Staples, former President of BOTH UFVA and SCS will drive up from Texas for the
Presses represented are Scholars Choice (a consortium), the U of Kansas P, the U of Oklahoma P, and the McFarland P. Naturally, these presses will be selling books, but also looking for contributors as well.
Our last meeting led to two books on The Presidency in Film--one a general
book on Hollywood's White House (UP of Kentucky) and the other a special volume on The West Wing (Syracuse UP). We plan at least one volume from this meeting;
John E. O'Connor is in charge of the publication efforts and will be available to talk with authors. We are also considering a Proceedings from the meeting.
Kansas City, Missouri is a central location and has tendrils of highways
extending out both East and West. We urge you to get into the ole pickuptruck and head our way for November 7-9, 2002.
All details for hotels, travel, and even the program, are on the web site.
