Sex/Sexuality and Relationships Education
One-day Conference at The Institute of Education, University of London, 29 May 2003
We are holding a one day conference on sex/sexuality and relationships education in central London on 29 May 2003. The conference is intended for academics, professionals, policy makers and practitioners in schools, colleges and elsewhere. We hope that you will be able to come – whether to offer a paper or simply attend.
Offers of papers are welcomed from within a variety of academic disciplines –particularly health education, sociology, philosophy and psychology – and from a variety of ideological standpoints. The conference will not assume that sex/sexuality and relationships education takes place only in educational institutions and the family. Contributions are therefore welcomed which, for example, analyse the impacts of media and other vehicles of culture on sexual behaviour and attitudes. Medical and epidemiological papers (e.g. of trends in the incidences of sexually transmitted infections) will not be accepted unless their educational implications are discussed adequately. We are particularly interested in papers which evaluate and/or critique existing theory and/or practice.
If you would like to offer a paper, please e-mail a title and abstract of up to 400 words to Professor Michael Reiss at m.reiss@ioe.ac.uk by January 2nd 2003 at the latest. Presented papers should be 20 minutes in length and will be followed by 15 minutes of discussion and questions. There will be parallel sessions. A selection of the papers will be published in a special issue of the journal Sex Education, to be edited by Simon Forrest and Vicki Strange.
If you would like to come to the conference, whether or not you will be giving a paper, please send a cheque for £35.00 made payable to ‘Institute of Education’ to Nikki Barton by February 1st 2003. The price may rise for registrations made after that date. Clearly state your name, institution and e-mail / postal address. The cost includes registration, lunch, all morning and afternoon refreshments and a personal subscription to the journal Sex Education for the year 2003 (unless you are already a personal subscriber). If coming from overseas and unable to pay in pounds sterling, please e-mail Nikki Barton or contact her by phone.
The conference will run from 10.30 to 16.30. Coffee/tea with freshly baked cookies will be available from 10.00 to 10.30. There will be lunch at 12.30 and coffee/tea with Danish pastries at 15.00.
The venue is The Institute of Education, University of London, situated in Bloomsbury in the heart of London. There is a map at http://www.ioe.ac.uk/ioeAboutBL/ALocation.htm
