The Theme of the Conference

Ethnic/racial relations have been a perennial theme in Southeast Asian studies. Current events have highlighted the tensions among ethnic groups and the need to maintain racial harmony for nation-building. The conference concentrates on analysis of the ethnic/race relations in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, with special reference to the roles of ethnic Chinese and their relations with other ethnic communities. It brings together a group of established scholars to critically examine some of the important issues such as ethnic politics, national identities, state policies and conflict resolutions. The conference will have parallel sessions in English and Chinese.

族群关系一直是东南亚研究的重要课题。目前世界局势的剧变更凸现出族群之间的紧张和族群和谐对国家建构的重要性。此国际会议集中探讨新加坡、马来西亚和印尼的族群关系，尤其是本地区华裔的角色和他们与其他族群的互动关系。 会议集合了此研究领域的专家学者，探讨的课题包括族群政治、文化认同、国家政策和冲突的解决方案。会议分中、英双语同时进行。
