Washington University has established a Visiting East Asian Professionals (VEAP) Program that allows us to invite a variety of professionals from East Asia for short-term visits on our campus. This semester our visitors are all professional journalists with experience covering the news for a variety of different publications in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. It is my pleasure to bring these visitors to your attention and to invite you and any interested students and faculty to participate in a number of events that we have scheduled for Saturday, November 9th. Foremost among these events will be a roundtable discussion with these and other journalists on covering the news in East Asia. "Asia in Print: A Dialogue with Asian and American Journalists" will feature over eight journalists, including Pulitzer Prize winner A.P. reporter Sang-Hun Choe and Ms. Ellen Soeteber, The Editor of the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch. Free of charge and open to the public, the roundtable will be held in the Empire Room of the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis from 2:30-4:30 and will be followed by a reception.
In the morning of this event we will host a series of workshops on our campus. "Writing Asia: A Journalist's Perspective on Issues in East Asia" will offer students of journalism and international affairs the opportunity to meet with our select panel of journalists in small group sessions from 9:00-12:00 and will be followed by lunch. Whereas the workshop is free, we require a completed registration form by October 21.
We are very excited about these events and strongly encourage you and any other interested faculty and students to attend. For more information and participant bios, please visit our website, or contact me via email at the address below.
