The conference "Television and the Mediterranean. Genealogies of a vision" (11-12 October 2002, MMSH, Aix-en-Provence) will be centred on the mechanisms by which memory of the past has been built up, as conveyed by the television services of the Mediterranean countries since the Sixties. It will pay particular attention to the series "Méditerrranée", designed in collaboration with Fernand Braudel.
Through lectures, round-table discussions and screenings of extracts, the organisers hope to stimulate cross-questioning between researchers and those working in television in the Mediterranean region, in order to promote comparative research.
The Mediterranean, which has inherited a mosaic of representations of itself, seems to be a particularly good field for questioning television’s creation of our memory of the past.
