Call for Abstracts/Essays. Dr. Robert Landrum of the University of South Carolina-Beaufort and Dr. Kurt Gingrich of Radford University are soliciting contributions for an anthology they are editing on the British union, tentatively entitled Visions of Britain: Conceptualizations of Anglo-Scottish Union and Empire.
This volume will explore several themes, including cross-border perceptions over time, proposed unions from circa 1300 to 1997, Anglo-Scottish cooperation outside union, and Scottish alternatives to Anglo-Scottish union. For the most part, the volume will concern itself with events up to and including the union of 1707, exploring less the event of the union of 1707 itself and more myriad avenues of Anglo-Scottish relations that had the union of 1707 as just one of many possible destinations.
We initially explored this theme in a panel at the 2002 AHA conference entitled, “Today the Tweed, Tomorrow the World: Actual and Possible Anglo-Scottish Union.” Since then we have gathered at least half a dozen essays committed to the volume. We seek to add at least that many more. We will appreciate all enquiries.
Please send a one-page abstract by 15 November 2002. Please include a brief CV along with professional contact information. Successful submissions will be notified by 1 December, with manuscripts due 1 February 2003.
