900. Rivista di Storia Contemporanea a by-yearly Italian journal of contemporary history invites submission of papers for a special issue devoted to the following theme:
The Soviet Century
The issue aims to examine the role played by the Soviet Union during the XX century in representing an alternative model of modernization (and an alternative teleology) to the Western/capitalist one. Subjects may include but are not limited to the following analyses:
- centralized planning (economic, urbanistic, architectural, etc.) as an alternative to the spontaneous mechanisms of market economies.
- Soviet propaganda and efforts to present a successful and alternative “Communist way of life”.
- Attempts to elaborate a set of specific Soviet symbols and icons to counter the success and spread of the American model.
- Western responses specifically induced by the existence of the Soviet challenge.
Manuscripts should be no more than 35/40 pages double-spaced and may be sent as a file attachment in either MS Word or Word Perfect format to the e-mail address below. Alternatively, three hardcopies of the manuscript may be mailed to our mailing address.

The journal welcomes submissions from all historiographical perspectives. Manuscripts can be submitted in Italian, English, Russian and French. Articles are published in Italian.
