The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library is an institution known all over for its objective of promoting high standards of historical research. It has launched a new quarterly journal titled Contemporary India. With multi-disciplinary focus, the journal aims at providing a forum to scholars worldwide for academic research and discussion on issues relating to the Indian nation and on its life in the modern period. Although titled Contemporary India, we wish to broaden the field of the journal to the post-1757 period coinciding roughly with the establishment of the British rule in India. The inaugural issue with the date line January-March 2002 includes contributions from eminent scholars from the world of social sciences besides book reviews.
