University of Oklahoma doctoral candidates William Bauer and Jeff Means are seeking a third panel member for the 2003 WHC in Fort Worth. This panel will look beyond the stereotypical image of the mounted Plains Indian by using census data from 1880 to compare the experiences of different tribes. Willy is examining the Wailacki of Round Valley, California, his tribal affiliation, and Jeff is studying the Oglala, Miniconjou, and Hunkpapa on Standing Rock Reservation, with the Oglala being his tribal affiliation. Neither of these tribes fit the popular perception of the mounted Plains Indian in 1880. Using data gathered from this special governmental census we will argue that the varied socioeconomic environments of the two reservations stemmed from the tribes' diverse cultural traditions and historical experiences. The third member of the panel should be examining census data from 1880 preferably, or 1870 or 1890 if possible, to reveal Indian experiences during this period. If you are interested please contact us as soon as possible and provide a brief summary of your work and a bio of yourself.
