Thanks to a late withdrawal I am looking for someone to write a chapter of 8000 words (including references ) on the influence of social science upon historical writing for a book I am editing on history and theory. The book is already contracted to a major publisher. It is aimed mainly at undergraduate students taking compulsory history and theory courses in the UK and at postgraduate students in the US, and so must be written in a clear and accessible style. It is expected, neverthless, that the chapter will make a significant contribution to the academic debate.
The chapter will discuss the influence of the social scientific tradition upon historical writing. It will introduce and explain relevant ideas and concepts from the founders of sociology and later theorists, and will critically appraise the ways in which these ideas have been used in historical writing. A particular feature of the book is that the influence of theory upon practical historical writing will be examined through the discussion of at least two extended examples.
If you are interested in writing this chapter please contact me for further details. I will require an abstract of up to 1000 words by 8 July 2002 and the completed chapter must be submitted by October 2002.
