W.E.B. Du Bois's landmark book "The Souls of Black Folk" has long been recognized as the founding text of the academic discipline of African American Studies. This symposium provides an opportunity for many of the scholars who have inherited and extended Du Bois's legacy to give sustained attention to one of the most influential texts in the American tradition; to critically examine the impact of 20th century black intellectuals on American and African American intellectual life; and to contemplate how the Du Boisean tradition might inform serious engagements with race and culture in the new millennium. The primary emphasis of the symposium concerns African American life, but the participants have been chosen to encourage discussion of Du Bois's past impact on and the future implications of his work for women, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Latino/as, post-colonial and feminist theorists, and activists focusing on issues such as minority health and poverty. The conference structure and the list of participants have been conceived to encourage discussions across disciplinary, geographical, and ideological boundaries. The conference will take place 10-12 April 2003; all sessions are open to the public. Main speakers include Professors Deborah McDowell, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., David Levering Lewis, and Howard Winant; over thirty participants on six panels will read scholarly papers or offer critical responses.
