Anglo-Japanese Alliance 0f 1902 Conference
Thursday 12th – Saturday 14th September 2002
This international conference, to be held in Glasgow University, Scotland, is designed to mark the centenary of the Anglo-Japanese alliance signed in 1902. Although its focus is firmly historical, its organisers are conscious of its relevance today, when once again Anglo-Japanese relations are close. The Conference will begin with the diplomatic and military context of the alliance, but will then move on to discuss the economic, commercial and cultural aspects of the Anglo-Japanese relations in the period 1902- 22. This is a particularly appropriate focus for the University of Glasgow, as students from Japan came to the Department of Naval Architecture in its early days.
Current speakers include:
- Ian Nish of the LSE
- Yoichi Hirama of Tokiwa University
- Keith Neilson of the RMC
- John Ferris of Calgary
- John Chapman, from the Scottish Centre for War Studies
- Chiharu Inaba of Meijo University,
- Frederick Dickinson of University of Pennsylvania
- Peter Lowe of Manchester University
- Noboru Koyama of Cambridge University Library
- John Charles Schencking of University of Melbourne
- Janet Hunter of the LSE
- Haruo Tohmatsu of Tamagawa University
- Hamish Ion of RMC
The price for the conference, for those wishing to take advantage of the full hospitality package, is £125, with concessions, (attending papers only), £50 and Graduate students £30.
The Conference will be open to the public, and it is the intention of the organisers to edit the conference papers for publication as a volume. Thus the deliberations of the conference will be disseminated to the widest possible audience.
