A conference that examines the geographical borders surrounding France and the cultural borders within the country in the past and present. The papers presented by established scholars and up-and-coming academics in the fields of French studies, politics, art and history engage with recent developments in border studies. They will demonstrate that borders can no longer be seen simply as political, static, and excluding, but also as social, integrative and changing, as sites where interaction, adaptation and mixture and conflict take place. Gino Raymond (University of Bristol) will give a plenary paper on the new politics that have grown at the margins of the political establishment, while Isabelle Larrivee (Morocco), will examine the Magrebian writes, who loses himself while trying to re-find an identity in her plenary talk. Other keynote speakers include Alistair Cole (University of Cardiff), Francois Roth (Universite Nancy 2), Jean-Jacques Monnier (UDB, Bretagne) and Catherine Levy (CNRS, Paris). Parallel sessions cover among others regional rivalry, literary and artistic margins, and gay identities. For a full programme and further information, please contact Dr. S. Gemie at the address below.
