Work For Us (WRK4US) is an online discussion forum about nonacademic careers
for humanities and social science PhDs and ABDs. It consists of a listserv,
where ongoing discussion takes place, and a website, where past discussions
are archived and made available to the public. A special feature of the
Work For Us listserv is the Guest Speaker Discussions, in which PhDs who have
left the academy appear on the list and share their stories of how they made
the transition. Guest Speaker Discussions take place six times a year and
have covered a diverse range of plausible careers including "Consulting,"
"Non-Profit Organizations," "Museums," "Foundations," "University
Communications," and "Technical Writing." The tone of the Work For Us
listserv is helpful and supportive, and nearly all postings are substantive
and relevant, thanks to a strict "no spam" policy (no petitions, no virus
warnings, etc.). Work For Us was founded in 1999 at The Ohio State
University by Paula Foster, then a grad student; since then, it has grown to
1000 subscribers from all over North America, and in January 2002 it moved
to the Woodrow Wilson Foundation server as part of the Humanities At Work
program. To subscribe, send a message to listserv@www.woodrow.org with
"subscribe WRK4US Your Name" as the text of the message (no quotes). If you
have difficulty subscribing, email Jaime Zamparelli, Technical Manager, at
zamparelli@woodrow.org. For a more detailed history of the list, or to read
previous discussions, visit the Work For Us website at
http://www.woodrow.org/phd/WRK4US/.
