The Mediterranean Cold War Conference, organised by the Public Record Office(PRO)in collaboration with the British International History Group will be held at the PRO on 21 and 22 June 2002. It will be introduced by Sir Michael Palliser, former Head of the Diplomatic Service. It is aimed at academics, students and all interested members of the public and will examine a key area of friction in the Cold War - the Mediterranean. The hardening of Cold War tensions in the Mediterranean theatre in the decade after the Second World War remains a fascinating area for researchers. It brings together problems of wider Cold War origins, tensions among the NATO powers, the breakdown of European imperial control and the links between Arab nationalism and Soviet foreign policy.
