"Unsettled Pasts: Reconceiving the West through Women's History" will bring together historians, community participants, activists, and artists to share the histories of women from diverse races, classes, and cultures, who forged the West we inherit. It is the first conference to link Western women's histories in Canada and the United States and a central goal of the event is to create dialogue across borders--both social and geographic. Plenary sessions will feature established and emerging historians and leaders, while over thirty smaller sessions will explore a wide variety of themes and methodologies: oral and material history; western women's history in the classroom; reconceiving the West through Native women's eyes; gendered dimensions of cultural contact; art and culture; religious, social, and political activism; gender, class, and the state. For a preliminary program, consult the conference website or request a printed copy from the University of Calgary Conference Services.
