THE EXTENSION PROGRAM AT CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY—SPRING 2002
PSYCHOANALYSIS, CINEMA & OTHER ARTS
From mid April to mid May 2002 we will screen four excellent films, each followed by a critical presentation from a psychoanalytic perspective. The films will be shown in their original versions with English subtitles.

“A price above rubies” (1998) directed by Boaz Yakin.
The static boundaries of an Orthodox Jewish Community threaten to stifle a young woman.

“Exotica” (1994), directed by Atom Egoyan
What drives a tax auditor to watch each night a young stiptease dancer perform in a school girl’s uniform? And why does she join in this exhibitionistic-voyeuristic ritual?

3) Friday, May 3, 2002, 7:15 pm,
“Risk” (2001)–Excerpts from Episode 8 of director Ken Burns famous documentary on Jazz.
This episode examines the risks that creative musicians like Charlie, “Bird”, Parker, Miles Davis, etc. took, in their new explorations in jazz music as well as in their involvement with addictive drugs.
Discussants: R. Karmel, Ph.D., C. Ellison (Dept. of Jazz studies, Concordia Univ.) and L. Dodes and B. Johnson, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts from Harvard Medical School.
4)Friday, May 10, 2002, 7:15pm,.
“All about my mother” directed by Pedro Almadovar.
The film traces complex generational ties. Through the revisiting of her past a woman reconciles with the hidden portions of her life which had resulted in her son’s attempts to know “all about my mother”.
