CALL FOR PAPERS
SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF DISCOVERIES
43rd Annual Meeting
Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico
(October 24 - 27, 2002)
The 2002 Society for the History of Discoveries (SHD) meeting in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, will address the theme of Exploration and Discovery in New Spain, although papers related to exploration, discovery, and the history of cartography of other areas are also welcome. Originally established in the mid 1500s, Guadalajara became a key location in the exploration and discovery of New Spain's northern frontier by the 1700s, and is now Mexico's second largest city. The historic community of Zapopan, in the metropolitan Guadalajara area, will be our meeting locale. All papers will be presented at El Colegio de Jalisco in Zapopan. SHD invites those wishing to present a paper at this meeting to submit a proposal by July 15, 2002. The proposal should not exceed one page in length and must include:
- the title of the presentation
- author's name and complete address/affiliation,
- abstract summarizing the paper's scope and findings.
For those not familiar with SHD meetings, some additional guidance may be helpful. Presenters at SHD meetings are normally provided about 25 minutes to make their presentations, followed by a brief question and answer session with the audience. The audience at SHD meetings is typically diverse. Some members are academicians, but many come from varied professions. All are especially interested in the processes and consequences of exploration and discovery - including the mapping of explored regions. All papers will be presented in English. Presenters are encouraged to use images (for example, historic maps or depictions of places) where appropriate. These can be in the form of handouts or slides that may help the audience better understand the subjects being discussed. Please be advised, however, that PowerPoint presentations will not be made at this meeting. In the interest of time and engaging the audience, presenters are encouraged to summarize and quote from their papers, if possible, rather than reading the entire paper word-for-word. Presenters wishing to have their papers considered for publications are invited to submit them to the SHD's annual publication Terrae Incognitae - The Journal for the History of Discoveries.
