The conference will examine how different nations, cultures, and religions justify war, and the limitations that they place upon its practice. Papers will include both theoretical and case studies. The keynote speaker will be Professor John Kelsay, author of 'Islam & War: A Study in Comparative Ethics', who will speak on 'War, Peace, and Justice in Islamic Tradition'. Other papers will examine Catholic and Orthodox Christianity, Sikhism, and Hinduism, and Buddhism and the war in Sri Lanka, as well as just war from a feminist perspective, Chinese just war ideas, and case studies from Africa, the ancient world, and the Gulf War.
There is no fee to attend the conference, which will take place at the University of Hull on 14 June 2002. Contact Dr. Paul Robinson for details.
