The College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Utah State
University presents the 2002 O. C. Tanner Symposium, to be held
April 18, 19, and 20 on the Utah State campus in Logan. The
symposium is free and open to the public.
This year's topic is "The Search for a Common Language:
Environmental Writing and Education." The symposium will bring
together leading writers, scholars, and scientists dedicated to
increasing public understanding of the environment and will explore
the many ways science contributes to the human engagement with
local, regional, and global landscapes.
"We have assembled a distinguished and dynamic group of speakers for
this symposium that will appeal to the citizens of Cache Valley and
the Intermountain West," symposium organizers said. "This will be an
exciting three-day opportunity to exchange ideas about the ways
multiple disciplines and cultures interpret humanity's evolving
relationship to nature."
Speakers include William Kittredge, Annick Smith, Louis Owens,
Robert M. Pyle, Ellen Meloy, Ken Brewer, Dan Flores, Jens
Boesenberg, Hartmut Grassl, Jennifer Price, Kent Ryden, Ted
Kerasote, Craig B. Stanford, Susan Tweit, and Keith Wilson. For
more information about the speakers, a tentative schedule, and a
registration form, visit our website at www.hass.usu.edu/tanner or

The 2002 Symposium is also sponsored by the American Studies Program
and English Department at Utah State University. Funding was also
