Americanization and Anti-Americanism.
The Impact of American Culture on Germany After 1945
Graduate Student Conference
October 16 and 17, 2002
Ohio State University
Columbus, Ohio
International security, conflict resolution, and globalization are
influenced not only by political and economic events, but also by our
understanding of cultural differences. Germany plays a central role in
this context, because it has been more than any other country in Europe a recipient of American culture during the last century. The conference on “Americanization and Anti-Americanism” will focus on the interplay between America and Germany in the decades since the end of World War II. It aims to analyze the role America has played in shaping the political, social, and cultural identity of Germany. We invite proposals from students in the fields of history, intellectual history, political science, philosophy, as well as media studies, American studies, and German studies. Presentations employing interdisciplinary approaches are particularly encouraged.
Possible topics for papers include but are not limited to
- America in German Literature, Theater and Film
- American Culture and the Cold War
- Americanization of Germany’s Economic and Social Life
- Mass Culture American Transmission and European Reception
- German Views of America
- From Avant-garde to Pop Culture
