CALL FOR PAPERS
Twenty-Seventh Colloquium on Literature and Film
October 10-12, 2002
Submissions are invited on all aspects of race and racism in the literature and/or film of all nationalities. Possible topics include but are not limited to:
race as a culturally constructed metaphor
the humanities as a composite of racialized disciplines
historical genocides; diasporas
the role of color in the perception and representation of ethnic difference
the opening of aesthetic canons to minority writers
the relationship of race to personal and cultural identity
passing and racial metamorphoses
race as inscription of otherness and alterity
the role of the arts and the media in constructing and preserving racial otherness
racism and xenophobia; race and citizenship; race and globalization
the intersections of race, class, and gender; privileges and failures of whiteness
social hierarchies and the human/animal barrier; race and place
philosophical and scientific foundations of race and racism
language as racial/national imperialism; discourses of race
postcolonial critiques of racial concepts; interracialisms and hybridities
slavery and colonialism; miscegenation and colonization
teaching about race and racism
race and technology; race in cyberspace and new media
Please submit 300-word proposals for papers and/or panels by May 15, 2002 to Deborah Janson at frlngcol@wvu.edu. Include a cover letter (e-mail) containing the proposal's title, complete contact information and institutional affiliation. Attachments should be in Microsoft Word or Word Perfect formatted for PCs or html.
A limited number of papers read at the Colloquium and submitted to the Editorial Board after their delivery will be considered for refereed publication in the West Virginia University Philological Papers. Papers may be read in English, French, German, or Spanish, but only manuscripts submitted in English can be considered for publication.
