From the perspective of historiography and theories of cultural memory, this seminar will analyze cinematic and literary texts that focus on the U.S. Civil Rights movement. Seminar participants will explore such issues as the role of witnesses and addressees; strategies of representing memory; the impact of race and gender discourses upon the transmission, reception and making of memory; and the politics of nostalgia. The seminar begins with a public lecture on Thur., June 6, and concludes at noon on Sunday, June 9. There are five two-hour discussion sessions during the seminar. In late April, participants are given a list of readings to complete before the seminar. Registration deadline is April 19, 2002.
