The Newberry Seminar in Rural History, sponsored by the center for Great Lakes at Michigan State University presents:
"Rural Identities"

Dr. Kathy Conzen, University of Chicago's History Department, will be presenting:
"Subjects of Democracy: Creating a German Lutheran Public in Nineteenth-Century Dodge County, Wisconsin"
and
Dr. Mitch Kachun, Western Michigan University's Department of History, will be presenting:
"Agitation, Education, and Congregation: Regional Networking in Nineteenth-Century African-American Emancipation Celebrations"
There is no charge to attend the seminar, but pre-registration is required. To register and request copies of the papers e-mail Rebekah Holmes, scholl@newberry.org, or call 312-255-3524.
The seminar format assumes that all participants have read the essay in advance, and that all those requesting the paper will attend the seminar. Please do not request a paper unless you plan to attend. We encourage faculty members to call the seminar to the attention of graduate students.
