Philanthropy and Liberal Education Seminar
June 12-21, 2002
The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University
Indianapolis, Indiana
The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University is seeking applicants for a scholars' seminar on philanthropy as part of a liberal education. The Center will host scholars from across the country for a select seminar in ways to integrate philanthropic teaching and research into the liberal arts at their universities.
Participants will address core ideas in the study of philanthropy and key issues involved in integrating those ideas into college and university work. Visiting scholars will present various aspects of philanthropic studies to the seminar and participate in conversations about the nature and dimensions of the field. Another group of scholars will also engage the participants in developing programs for research on philanthropy in a wide variety of disciplines and for introducing philanthropic studies into the undergraduate liberal arts curriculum.
Participants will increase their understanding of what constitutes Philanthropic Studies and how it might become an integrated element of liberal education. The Center hopes the Seminar will create collaborative relationships among faculty members working on aspects of philanthropy, and will lead to research publications and proposals for curricular change.
Faculty in colleges and universities with a commitment to liberal education and an interest in the scholarship of philanthropy, as well as those working in other institutions focused in liberal education, such as humanities councils, foundations, or educational think tanks should apply. Preference will be given to scholars preparing for the integration of philanthropic content in existing undergraduate liberal education.
Participants in the seminar will receive a $1000 honorarium and up to $1500 reimbursement for travel and lodging expenses.
