Elizabethans in New Spain
The book "Viajeros Isabelinos en la Nueva España" by Lourdes de Ita (2001),has been recently published in Spanish by the Mexican editorial house Fondo de Cultura Económica. This is a work on the first British in 16th century Mexico, their experiences and perception of the Country, population and Spanish regime. The author distinguishes three groups of travelers: Merchants, pirates and those "cast away" or "put on shore" in the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in 1568. A group of 114 men who passed by all sort of experiences in the Country. Since their encounter with the Chichimeca (savage indians) in the northern frontier of New Spain, to their imprisonment and judgment by the Mexican Inquisition.
