Panel Title: Modernism/Postmodernism: Critical Approaches from a Transnational Perspective
We are interested in filling a third slot on a panel for the 2003 AHA Annual Meeting. The aim of this panel is to examine the dual concepts of modernism and postmodernism from a historical and transnational perspective. The panel currently consists of 1) an intellectual/cultural historian of America who will be looking at elements of early 20th century thought and culture as a way of testing and reformulating the modern-postmodern divide, and 2) an art historian of Germany who will be looking at visual culture in interwar Europe in order to interrogate the “modern” in “modern art.” We are seeking a third panelist who is similarly interested in evaluating the meanings of modernity and/or postmodernity, examining their contested periodization, or discussing their significance for historical thinking and scholarship.
