Fred Astren, Ph.D. (San Francisco State University), will discuss the ways in which some Jews and Muslims have reacted to the challenges of the modern world. The seminar will examine essential tenets of both faiths and modern issues that have drawn sometimes harsh reactions from fundamentalists: the existence of the State of Israel; reaction to past colonialism and current nationalism; and problems of technology. It will also explore how extremists like Osama Bin Laden exploit "golden ag" notions of the past to politicize debate in the present, and how they respond to the "threats" posed by liberal societies and governments. The seminar meets Sunday, February 3, 1-5 pm.
