I am seeking copanelists for a session tentatively titled "Popular Justice in Rural America." I am especially keen to hear from individuals who are rethinking notions of justice, orthodoxy, heterodoxy, social regulation, reform, extra-legal trials, etc. Papers that address justice as it relates to religion, culture, race, gender, and/or colonialism are strongly desired. Please contact me off-list at the email address provided if you are interested in submitting a paper. The deadline for the 2003 OAH Annual Meeting in Memphis, Tennessee is 15 January 2002. In order to be considered for this panel, email a 100-200 word description to me by 4 January 2002 with a c.v. attached.
My own paper examines the religious issues behind vigilante justice in the Carolinas in the late eighteenth century.
