"Al:Andalus": A Decade of New Research on the Art and Archaeology of Islamic Spain Panel, MESA 2002
|
|
Paper proposals are invited for a panel on the Art and Archaeology of Islamic Spain (711-1492 AD) which is planned for the 36th annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA), to be held in Washington D.C., 23-26 November 2002. 2002 marks the tenth anniversary of "Al-Andalus: The Art of Islamic Spain", the exhibition hosted jointly in 1992 by the Alhambra Palace in Granada and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the publication of its influential catalogue. The catalogue was intended to inspire a new generation of scholarship on the art of Islamic Spain, and still provides an essential point of reference for scholars working in this field. With this milestone in mind, the panel will provide a forum for current research on the art and archaeology of Islamic Spain. We seek proposals from new and emerging scholars in this field (those currently researching or who have recently completed doctorates), as well as from scholars working outside the United States. Paper topics
may address, but are not limited to, the following issues:
architecture, urbanism and patronage; archaeology,
including reports of recent or current excavations, or
restoration projects; epigraphy; the relationship between
literature and art; studies of the minor arts; costumes
and textiles; music and entertainment; cultural transfer
within the Iberian Peninsula and to/from contemporary
Islamic countries; studies on regions of al-Andalus
outside the traditional heartlands of Córdoba, Granada,
and Seville; or studies of modern historiographical
attempts to construct an Andalusi cultural identity. It is
hoped that the proceedings of the panel will be
published as a monograph on the Art and Archaeology of
Islamic Spain. Abstracts (250 words) of the proposed
paper and a current curriculum vitae should be sent no
later than 31 December 2001 to the panel organizers:
Glaire Anderson, History, Theory & Criticism of
Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology:
glaire@mit.edu Mariam Rosser-Owen, Oriental Institute,
Oxford University: mariam.rosser-owen@orinst.ox.ac.uk
