I am a Ph.D. student at History Department of Georgetown University.
I am looking to join or to organize a panel at the convntion of AAASS on the history of the Caucasus or on the problems of identity in Russian Empire.
I am working on the problem of “Russian Caucasians.” This paper is a preliminary attempt to examine the cultural identity of the Russian veterans who fought in the Caucasus in nineteenth century. The modern Russian term “Kavkazets”, which is indiscriminately applied to the people of the Caucasus, was originally employed in absolutely different context. This term distinguished Russians themselves. Having spend years in the Caucasus Russian militaries and civil officials acquired certain elements of the local cultures, which were very distinguishable in the every day life. This raises the so-called problem of frontiers or Russian Orient.
Given that the deadline is December 14th, I'd appreciate any responses ASAP. If you are looking for a panel or a panel participant along these lines, please get in touch with me by E-mail or telephone. mamedorm@georgetown.edu (202)-368-0925.
