The Sussex University Postgraduates' History Forum invites papers from all postgraduate students for its annual conference, on the theme of 'Inclusion and Exclusion, to be held on 9th and 10th April 2002 at the University of Sussex, Brighton.
Issues of inclusion and exclusion are central to so much current social and economic historical research yet they are terms which are frequently trivialised within the media and within political debate. Utilising these terms as the theme for this postgraduate conference will encourage serious discussion about these issues, enabling research studnets to advance their own understandings of the meaning and significance of issues surrounding inclusion and exclusion.
Students should feel free to interpret 'inclusion and exclusion' as widely as they wish but possible themes could include:
Gender and Sexuality
Nationalism and Identity
Alienation, Resistance and Activism
Education
Gentrification, Urbanisation and Rural Exclusion
Age and the Generation Gap
Research methods as a means to inclusion (or exclusion?)e.g.oral history research, advocacy and empowerment
This conference is run exclusively by and for postgraduate students in the humanities and social sciences and one of the primary aims of the event is to provide a forum for students, many of whom may be first time speakers, to present their work in a stimulating and supportive atmosphere.
Thoses wishing to present should submit abstracts not exceeding 500 words by 11th January 2002, with a view ro successful papers being completed by 1st March 2002. Successful applicants will be notified by 1st February 2002. Please email abstracts to C.E.Roberts@sussex.ac.uk or post to the address below.
